Free IRS filer software allows you to prepare and file your federal personal income tax return for free with tax preparation and filing software. If your AGI is less than $73,000, you can file your tax return with free software and find free government refund options.

Many software solutions use W-2s to verify your military status or determine the deductions you're eligible for. Some free tax filing options are available through Income or Required Forms. Filing your tax return requires gathering a lot of documents and personal information, so make sure you've gathered everything you need before you get started.

MilTax software will be available from January 17, 2023, when the IRS tax season opens through mid-October. You can use the software to file one federal return and up to three state returns (good for military personnel who change state residence in a tax year).
